Housing Australia designs $1 billion program for crisis and transitional accommodation
Housing Australia today published its program guidance to prepare the industry on a new National Housing Infrastructure Facility (NHIF) program designed to increase the supply of crisis and transitional housing for women and children experiencing domestic violence, and youth experiencing homelessness, across Australia.
Housing Australia will soon engage eligible applicants, including Community Housing Providers, on the NHIF Crisis and Transitional Housing program ahead of opening the Expression of Interest (EOI). The new facility is designed to allow successful applicants to access funds for the construction of new crisis and transitional housing, or the acquisition and conversion of existing buildings to crisis and transitional housing, including the supply of safe and secure short-term accommodation.
On 2 December 2024, the Federal Government registered an updated Investment Mandate to commit an additional $1 billion of funding to the NHIF, a funding program administered by Housing Australia. The funds comprise of up to $700 million for grants and $300 million for concessional loans to support the delivery of more crisis and transitional accommodation for women and children experiencing domestic violence, and for youth experiencing homelessness.
Housing Australia anticipates opening the EOI, and application process, for funding under the NHIF Crisis and Transitional Housing program in early 2025. In preparation for the opening of the EOI, eligible applicants are encouraged to consider opportunities that may align to the program guidance.
Housing Australia CEO, Scott Langford, said, “Housing Australia looks forward to actively engaging with the industry to boost safe and secure housing for those facing a crisis or in need of transitional housing options. We will work closely with the sector to encourage eligible participants to prepare for the upcoming EOI to enable a pathway for more housing options as soon as possible.”
